Description of the new feature / enhancement

This is about keyboard shortcuts managed by the Keyboard Manager applet.

Currently, when an application is started through a keyboard shortcut defined in Shortcuts section of Keyboard Manager, the main window of the freshly started application does not seem to receive focus. In some rare cases (probably also depends on the application) the window receives focus, but most of the time it does not.

Also, in some cases the new window open under the existing desktop windows (again, this behavior is strangely intermittent).

It would be nice to have Keyboard Manager to ensure that the new window is opened on top of pre-existing desktop windows and that it receives focus.

Scenario when this would be used?

  • The usefulness of the "open on top" functionality is self-explanatory. When the shortcut quietly opens the app window somewhere under other windows it is often very confusing. It is not clear whether the shortcut worked at all.

  • The "focus the window" functionality is also pretty self-explanatory: after using the shortcut the user might want to start typing into the app right away. But when the main window is not focused, the subsequent keypresses just go to nowhere instead of going to the freshly started app. Also, if the shortcut is used by mistake, it is useful to be able to immediately close the unwanted window by pressing Alt+F4. Currently it does not work, since Alt+F4 goes to nowhere.
