Bringing this back around full circle since it was inspired by the cleanup hack in GEMmaker. Feel free to try it out and let me know if it's as good as the built-in cleanup.
It doesn't do the resume yet like GEMmaker, but it would be good to see if the basic cleanup is as effective. There are some scripts in the nf-boost repo that you can use to plot the work dir disk usage over time for multiple runs

Hello friends, I don't know how active you still are with GEMmaker, but I implemented an experimental work dir cleanup in a plugin called nf-boost:
