I just had this random idea and I wanted to suggest it, although it might not fit with the lore at all. It's basically like the shimmer from Terraria except a more dangerous version. I was thinking about ways the crimson cult might have a structure they can spawn in so they can appear in more ways than just through portals.

The crimson catacombs are tunnel networks deep underneath the ground, where the crimson cult tries to create strange and powerful artifacts like those left behind by the eldritch. The catacombs are full of pots and crimson knights with libraries full of clerics. At the heart of the catacombs is a large door, guarded by a special crimson praetor who drops a key upon death, which opens the door. Inside is a large room with a pit full of a strange, dark liquid.

The liquid can be used for special crafting, allowing the player to throw items into it and create new thaumcraft related ones. Some recipes are more basic, like throwing in stone to get eldritch stone. Maybe some items can be used to create new crimson cult items.
Throwing items into the pit is risky, however, as it is completely unstable and unpredictable. Several ill things can happen when items are thrown into the pit. Sometimes items are produced along with byproducts, sometimes the items are simply consumed and nothing happens, or items can be consumed and turned into dangerous byproducts without creating the intended items. The more warp the player has, they have a higher chance of receiving rarer and better items, sometimes in larger quantities, but the side effects of using the pit are more common and more dangerous.

Some of the effects:

  • The pit creates a loud rumbling sound, which can also accompany any of the other effects
  • The pit releases a large amount of flux, which can lead to rifts nearby
  • Flux wisps emerge from the pit
  • The pit creates lightning that gives the player warp
  • The pit inflicts effects on the player, such as unnatural hunger or flux phage
  • The pit spits out a swarm of eldritch crabs
  • The pit spits out thaumic slimes
  • Several taint seeds appear around the pit, sometimes accompanied by taintacles if there is already taint nearby and the player chose to ignore it
  • Eldritch guardians appear around the pit
  • Giant taint seeds appear around the pit
  • If there is already taint, a giant taintacle appears next to the pit

Jumping into the pit has the same effect as touching liquid death, and the player will die quickly if they don't leave. They can bucket the pit fluid, but releasing it anywhere except next to another pit block will turn it into thaumarhia sludge.
Furthermore, the crimson cult doesn't appreciate their creation being used without their consent, and a crimson portal can rarely appear next to the pit after its use.

The pit is essentially a risky way of crafting materials that are difficult to obtain (I'm not sure what exactly those materials are, maybe something used in later additions to the mod), and players can even try to create the ill effects to obtain primordial pearls from giant taintacles. Maybe they could even craft new bosses with the pit.

I'm not sure if you like or even take suggestions, but I just thought I would post this idea in case you do like it. Thank you!

Structures are being added in one of the next updates, we will see where it leads from there because I do like this idea! :)
