Animated avif image viewers

Is there an image viewer supporting animated avifs?

• nsxiv based on imlib2 based on libheif doesn't support this: https://codeberg.org/nsxiv/nsxiv/issues/529
• feh is also based on imlib2
• mpv based on ffmpeg doesn't support decoding animated avif
• pqiv: Animated avif support phillipberndt/pqiv#253

What features are you looking for in an image viewer supporting animated AVIF files?

Your environment likely has a recent version of a common Internet browser.
If so, it can be used to view animated AVIF files: https://caniuse.com/avif

For the more advanced usage of looking into the intricacies of the HEIF container structure of an AVIF file, I may suggest https://github.com/gpac/mp4box.js/.

What features are you looking for in an image viewer supporting animated AVIF files?

The specific feature I'm looking for is pausing, rewinding and playing frame by frame. See also: #2640

Although there are some differences, avif animations are very similar to mp4 video files, so you might have some luck with some video players. For example, OpenShot (a video editor) works with avif animations: drag them to the timeline and you can use left and right arrow keys to go frame by frame. I was also able to get vlc to play them by changing occurences of 'pict' to 'vide' (sed 's/pict/vide/g' myfile.avif > myfile.mp4) but it still didn't work with mpv for some reason.

Support for animated avif seems to be implemented by imlib2 now https://git.enlightenment.org/old/legacy-imlib2/issues/28
